1930s Pair of Colette Gueden Ceramic Zebras for Atelier Primavera

A superb pair of Ceramic Zebras by Colette Gueden (1905-2000) for Atelier Primavera, Paris. Dating from the late 30's and typical of the quality and verve of Gueden's ceramics, they were created in collaboration with Pol Chambost at the workshops in Vallauris or those of Limoges.

Pieces such as these were made by the Primavera design studio for sale at the exclusive Paris department store Printemps. Infact, the name of Colette Gueden are closely associated with both Primavera and Printemps. By the time Gueden started there the fame of Primavera was well established: founded in 1912 by René Guilleries, and aided by his wife, designer Charlotte Chauchet-Guilleries the workshop aimed to provide modern and stylish furniture and objects to larger audiences.

Gueden, who was born in 1905 in Indochina, entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne in 1923 where she graduated three years later. In 1927 in Paris, she worked as a designer at Primavera alongside Claude Lévy, Gisele Favre, Madeleine Sougez. She became manager in 1934, then director in 1938.
