18th Century French Baroque Crucifix Cushion Mirror
An early 18th century crucifix cushion mirror in the late baroque manner. Magnificently carved in giltwood and bone; the mirror depicts Christ on the cross laid onto black velvet, decorated with a deaths head device and surrounded by a giltwood frame set with floral motifs and foliate swags surrounding the inset mirrored panels.
Devotional mirrors such as these would have been used in the private chapels of larger houses as 'Memento Mori', combining the reflection of the living within the presence of Christ's crucifixion.
