An exceptional set of four gilt Louis XVI chairs, comprising of two armchairs and two side chairs, circa 1780.

The chairs are hand-carved and finished in gilt laid over gesso. Beautifully proportioned, the arms end with a flourishing scroll and curve down onto a neoclassical pilar resting on combination dice, each side with a floral decoration. Running through the d-shaped belt, sides and back-rest is a fine and deep carving ,featuring a twirling laurel and oak leaf pattern, set off by four elegantly tapering column legs and carved ribbed finials.

The chairs bare a stamp to the underneath of front rail but it is not legible only a few letters are decipherable. Images attached of stamp

An identical set of four chairs was sold at Sothebys New York 2017

A considered restoration of gilt has been undertaken, in keeping with the natural ageing of a piece nearing 250 years old.
