Signed Liberty & Co. Oak Arts and Crafts Cabinet
An early 20th century Liberty & Co oak cupboard attributed to Leonard Wyburd.
This piece is constructed from grained oak, enriched with hand-hammered wrought iron escutcheons, circular drop handles, and mounted over a frieze drawer, raised on a chamfered stand. The doors open to reveal four shallow open sliding drawers.
The most characteristic Liberty furniture was made from oak, solidly and well-constructed in a rugged style based on English rural forms.
By the 1890s, a larger range of furniture had become available, much of it designed by Wyburd himself. Like this piece, the oak was rendered to create the colour and finish of an older piece of furniture.
